After suffering a disappointing loss to North Salinas last week, the San Benito High girls volleyball team defeated visiting Everett Alvarez in three games (25-16, 25-15, 25-16) Tuesday night in Hollister.

Sam Klauer had 22 digs for the Lady Balers, which improve to 2-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 10-7 overall.

Teammate Sara Yamasaki added 16 digs.

But San Benito head coach Dean Askanas said the highlight from Tuesday’s match came from freshman Raelynn Heredia.

Called up to the varsity lineup just recently, the first-year setter filled in Tuesday night for starter Alisha Cornick, who was sidelined with an illness.

“And she played a great game,” Askanas said. “Her sets were all really clean and I thought she played a terrific game.”

Heredia finished with 17 assists.

“You’re going to celebrate all your victories and take the positives,” Askanas said, “and Raelynn was a positive.”

However, the head coach added that San Benito had some long rallies against Alvarez, and will need to “terminate” better against rival Salinas on Thursday night.

San Benito will visit Salinas for a 6:30 p.m. match.

“When you play Salinas,” Askanas said, “it’s about which team terminates first.”
