Lady Rams sweep Cabrillo College for first time in 3 years;
Men’s soccer team downs Monterey Peninsula College
GILROY
Gavilan women’s volleyball head coach Kevin Kramer knew his team was up against a challenge when it hosted Cabrillo College on Friday night.
Since the program’s reinstatement three years ago, the Rams had never beaten the Seahawks, with many losses disrupting Gavilan’s playoff aspirations.
The Rams, however, were in the midst of a four-match, 12-set winning streak as they took the court Friday, and it was clear to Kramer that this team carried a different attitude into the Coast Conference match.
“The past few years there may have been a little intimidation out on the court, but this year the girls walked out there thinking they could win,” Kramer said. “That was a huge thing.”
Thoughts of a win soon turned into actual results as the Rams swept the Seahawks in three games (25-21, 25-22, 25-18).
“We didn’t spend a whole lot of time on them,” Kramer said about his team’s preperation. “We have been working hard and doing what we do correctly. As long as we took care of the ball and didn’t make a ton of errors, we knew we would be in the match. I wasn’t really anticipating a three-game sweep, but we will take it. It was pretty big.”
Kramer said Suzanne Schaefer had her best overall match of the season, dishing out 29 assists to go along with 10 digs, five kills and three service aces.
Sophomore Bri Romero continued her strong play with a match-high 10 kills and added 17 digs. Tessa Fischer and Cheyenne Hambey came up big, just as they did in the Rams’ match earlier in the week against Chabot, combining for 13 kills.
Gavilan (10-5, 2-0) hosts Monterey Peninsula College on Wednesday before a road match in Salinas against Hartnell.
“We have to keep talking about the things we have been doing,” Kramer said. “We just want to win every point, that’s our goal. Don’t worry about the outcome of the game, just win the next point. Everything we do from this point on are kind of firsts for the program and that excites these kids.”
The Rams have not dropped a set in the month of October.
“It’s everybody kind of understanding how their roles fit into the bigger picture and taking ownership of what they can bring to the table,” Kramer said. “It’s changed our whole way of thinking.”
