The San Benito girls volleyball team qualified to the postseason Thursday night after it defeated visiting Everett Alvarez in three games (25-7, 25-13, 25-14) at Hollister’s Mattson Gym.
The win positions the Balers with a 6-6 record in the Tri-County Athletic League, 17-18 overall. The team will now await its seeding in next week’s Central Coast Section playoffs, which are scheduled to be announced on Saturday.
Thursday’s win, meanwhile, showcased a Baler squad that prevented the Eagles from finding any offensive rhthym.
Alvarez, in fact, had recently taken a set from powerhouse Salinas, but San Benito never allowed Thursday’s match to enter a fourth game.
“I felt we played very well,” San Benito head coach Dean Askanas said. “I’m pleased we didn’t play down to their level. We maintained our level and what we’re capable of.”
Alvarez finishes its season winless in the TCAL.
Katherine Breger once again led the Balers with 11 kills on Thursday, while teammate Ellie Burley added 10 kills and Ryan Asp and Jessica Steigelman finished with eight kills and four kills, respectively.
Both Sara Yamasaki and Mari Vallejo contributed 13 digs apiece, while Raelynn Heredia had 29 assists.
“Tonight,” Askanas added, “we played to our potential.”
The CCS seedings are to be announced on Saturday, with the first round of games scheduled for next Wednesday. If San Benito is granted a first-round bye, however, the team won’t play until next Saturday, Nov. 13.
