The San Benito volleyball team is coming off of a five-game victory against Monterey and hopes to build some momentum for tonight’s game against Gilroy.
San Benito (8-13, 4-4 TCAL) defeated Monterey 25-15, 13-25, 25-20, 16-25, 15-11. Five of the eight league matches this season have gone to the tie-breaker game. The Balers have won three and lost two of those.
“We think we should be able to win every match,” said Baler coach Henke Mao. “We can beat all the teams in league we lost to in the first half. The passing is getting better and we are serving tougher.”
Against Monterey, San Benito had seven team blocks and two solo blocks by Tomas Rebecchi. Nathan Thome led the Balers with seven kills. Jonathan Crespea had six kills, and Kyle Fowles had five. Setter Jeff Hawks had three kills on over passes and 25 assists.
“It was a total team effort because we had a lot of good defensive plays,” Mao said. “The team really rallied around each other, especially the last game of the match.”
Last time in Gilroy, San Benito lost in five games to the Mustangs.
“I am sure Gilroy has improved,” Mao said. “If we move our feet and place our serve well, we should win the match in three or four games.”
