Hollister – Kelsey Jeffries is hoping to return to Fight Night at the Tank on Thursday, but as of Monday evening she still had no opponent. Or at least not a contract with an opponent.
After a roller coaster series of events last week saw Goossen Tutor Promotions find an opponent and then watch that woman back away, matchmaker Tom Brown appeared to be in final negotiations with another potential Jeffries opponent late Monday.
“Today, I think (Brown) cranked it up a notch,” Jeffries’ manager Bruce Anderson said Monday evening. “This girl in Oklahoma accepted the fight and I expect a contract in the morning.”
Jeffries has been eagerly awaiting her 10th appearance at Fight Night, largely because of the opportunity to fight in front of her hometown fans. But with weigh-ins set for 5pm on Wednesday, negotiations are coming down to the wire.
Brown inquired Monday whether Jeffries, who has been set to box at 122 pounds, would be open to taking the ring in a 120-pound fight, Anderson related. That would be a much more likely scenario than the Road Warrior accepting a fight against a heavier opponent.
In March, Goossen Tutor presented a match that Anderson said was two weight classes heavier than Jeffries, so the Road Warrior’s manager pulled her from Fight Night three days before the event. Anderson reiterated Monday that he was not willing to let Jeffries’ opponent exceed 122 pounds.
“I’m just not going to let her be put in at the last minute at a dangerous weight,” he said.
Nonetheless, despite the considerable ups and downs of the past week, Anderson was cautiously optimistic that Brown had found the match that would ensure Jeffries’ bout Thursday night.
“I would say we have a fight,” the Road Warrior’s manager said. “We’re not coming this close and having this one fall out.”
