Hawks battle Anchorpoint Christian Thursday, but can’t pull out
win
SAN JUAN BAUTISTA
Anchorpoint Christian outscored the Anzar boys basketball team 17-4 in the third quarter and held on for a 54-49 victory Thursday night in San Juan Bautista.
Anchorpoint’s Marcus Harell led all scorers with 25 points, as the Warriors prevented the Hawks from picking up their first win of the season.
Anzar is now 0-4 on the year.
“We matched up pretty well. It was a pretty good game,” Anzar head coach Ed Cecena said. “Both teams played pretty evenly in the first half.
“But they went on a run in the third quarter and opened up a little bit of a lead. They just had too much for us in the end.”
Mark Rania and Isaac Staley each supplied 14 points for the Hawks, while Jason Merz added 13.
It was by far the closest game Anzar has played this season. The team is having a down year, and have lost three other games already this season by scores of 43-27, 65-18 and 46-14.
“They just did a better job at converting baskets,” said Cecena, who was playing with eight guys on his roster Thursday, compared to Anchorpoint’s seven. “We’re having trouble finishing easy baskets.”
Anzar will visit Harker School in San Jose on Monday. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
“We’re just gonna keep playing, keep working on skills,” Cecena said, “and that’s what we’re gonna do, just try to get better.”
