In its first ever 8-on-8 football game, Anchorpoint Christian pulled away against Fresno on the road to win 20-12 Friday night.
“It was phenomenal because they have already been in existence for awhile,” said Warriors coach K.C. Adams. “We came out with the first-game jitters. It was a good team effort. We shut down their offense. They are a good team – big and fast.”
The Anchorpoint defense led by Joe Apolinar (9 tackles) and Kenneth Urbanski (8 tackles) and Ryan Lasondak stepped up in the fourth quarter to hold off Fresno.
Lasondak had the go-ahead touchdown catch in the fourth off a slant for about 20 yards. He had five catches for 75 yards
In the second quarter, quarterback Adrian Rodriguez (5-for-8 for 65 yards) had a 35-yard bootleg touchdown he ran untouched down the right side.
Fresno answered right back, returning the following kickoff. But Anchorpoint countered with its own kick return touchdown, a 50-yarder by Christian McCrimmon (19 carries for 85 yards).
“I am extremely proud of them for hanging in there tough,” Adams said. “They bent a little bit didn’t break. They came together as a family and we had a picnic.”
Adams said he hopes the success can continue next week when the Warriors play their first home game.
“It lets them feel like we got something to work for,” Adams said. “The kids got a chance to see what it is like to win. It was good to see them supporting each other.”
