Around the Water Cooler

Panelists answered the following: Do you consider it safe for children to go trick-or-treating from door to door in Hollister neighborhoods on Halloween night?
Mary Zanger: “Yes. Nothing should spoil the great American tradition of trick or treating for Halloween fun. Let children’s imaginations soar as costumes unfold. The only scary things are the ghost and goblins flying around neighborhoods’ front yards that masquerade as haunted houses.”
Ruth Erickson: “Yes, if parents accompany them to homes of those people who they know.”
Nants Foley: “I never let my daughter go without an adult. But really, who needs a bag of candy sitting around for weeks afterwards? But I loved it as a child so I can’t really speak against it now!”
Richard Place: “I think it’s safer than voting. For the kids it’s “Trick or Treat”. For us it’s ‘Truth or Consequences.’”
Marty Richman: “Yes, it is safe provided the parents take some common sense precautions. The most important things to remember are that younger children need to go with an alert adult escort and the most prevalent threat to all trick-or-treaters is traffic. The watchwords are, ‘see and be seen.’”
