It happened around midnight Monday at Fourth Street and Mapleton Avenue, said Jim Hart with the city water department. Crews were at the site working on repairs Tuesday, and Hart expected it might be paved over by today.
Hart noted Tuesday how crews had the main repaired and residents’ water had been restored in that block.
That break occurred on the water main that runs along San Benito Street from Nash Road to Fourth Street, and then from there to Line Street, City Manager Clint Quilter said. City officials have broached the idea of replacing the line, which is more than 50 years old. They are considering options during budget discussions for the 2010-11 fiscal year.
Council members will examine the cost of replacing the entire system versus continuing to do repairs. Quilter said there is funding available in a water enterprise fund for a cost study, at $10,000 to $15,000.
