The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory through 8 p.m. tonight for San Benito County and other interior portions of the San Francisco and Monterey Bay regions.

Though the temperature in Hollister was near 84 degrees at 3 p.m., the weather service was warning the elderly and the very young to be “especially careful by drinking plenty of water and seeking a cooler location for the day if no air conditioning is available in your living quarters.”

A strong area of high pressure combined with offshore winds was expected to bring the warmest temperatures of the year to the region on the longest day of the year today. Interior valleys were expected to approach 100 degrees, with slight cooling expected Wednesday.

The weather service said some relief is expected each night as low temperatures drop into the 60s ahead of a significant cooling trend beginning Friday and running through the weekend.

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The weather service encourages people to wear lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing as well as a hat to shield the sun.

Young children and pets should never be left in vehicles under any circumstances during warm or hot weather, the weather service noted.
