Although both the Anzar boys’ and girls’ basketball teams fell short of their respective league crowns in the Coastal Athletic League this past winter, finishing in second and third place, a total of nine distinctions were passed down to the Hawks when the CAL recently announced its year-end awards, including five first-team selections.

Jesse Ramirez, Andres Gomez and Nick Salgado each received a first-team nod for the Anzar boys, while Delaney McKinney and Melissa Weckerle earned a first-team selection on the girls side.

Weckerle also received the Sportsmanship award in the CAL, which was one of just three awards passed down by the league.

Meanwhile, Shelby Sorensen, Emily Anderson and Gaby Medina each received honorable mention in the CAL.

At 4-5 in league, the Hawks finished in third place this season behind York (6-2) and league champ Pacific Collegiate.

Back on the boys’ side, the Hawks were shorthanded to just a few players all season, but were led by their first-team selections in Ramirez, Gomez and Salgado, all of whom averaged double-digit point totals.

Ramirez was the offensive leader of that pack. He averaged approximately 20 points per game, and had a three-game stretch in late January when he had back-to-back 30-point games, then followed that with a season-high 31-point performance.

Salgado, meanwhile, scored a season-high 28 points against rival Anchorpoint Christian on Feb. 10, while Gomez deposited a season-high 22 points against Trinity Christian on Jan. 26.
