Our first Red Phone caller, a local man, asked the Crimson Crusader why police and sheriff’s vehicles aren’t washed by inmates at the San Benito County Jail. Our caller also wanted to know who pays the cost of washing police cars.

The Crimson Crusader called up Sheriff’s Lt. Roy Iler to get the answer. Iler said inmates used to wash the sheriff’s office cars, but the practice was changed because of the damage they caused to the cars. Iler said inmates routinely broke antennas and scratched decals on the side of the cars. Replacing one set of scratched decals costs about $300 – a lot more than the price of a car wash.

“The damage they caused ended up costing us more money,” he said.

Iler said inmates have little motivation to do a quality wash job. He said the Sheriff’s Office actually saves money by not having inmates wash their vehicles.

Who pays for the car washes? That’s easy, dearest caller, the answers is: taxpayers. Washing a car is part of maintaining a vehicle. The Sheriff’s Office has a budget for vehicle maintenance that is used for, among many other things, washing cars. Keeping a car clean is a critical part of maintaining it.
