The state department of public health announced an escalation in cases of pertussis, otherwise known as whooping cough.
There had been 4,558 cases reported in California as of Tuesday, according to the report from the California Department of Public Health declaring an epidemic. That is more than all of the cases reported last year, according to the report issues this week.
