County more than five years ago, you’d think that I would be used
to the backward politics of the area. This is far from true, as is
apparent in the recent approval of a hillside building restriction
implemented by the outgoing board.
People don’t move to Hollister because the housing is affordable. The housing here is less expensive than San Jose, but it is far from affordable. People move to Hollister because it is a nicer, friendlier place to live versus the yuppiedoms of San Jose, Morgan Hill. People in Hollister DO know their neighbors, and they are generally much less competitive between each other because life moves at a slower pace here. In San Jose and Morgan Hill you have to wait in line at the supermarket. You wait in line to get gas. You wait in line to get a table at a restaurant. Not only that, but you have to wait at the myriads of stop lights needed to control the myriads of people. It’s a rat race up there, and the way to survive is to think only about yourself. Compassion is for the weak. Those who choose not to become emotionally closed off and self-absorbed come to Hollister. It’s a bit more of a drive, but you can get a table whenever you want, you can get gas without waiting, and you wait at most one person deep in line at the supermarket. We’re not in competition here, and as such we are a much friendlier class of people. That’s why people move to Hollister.
