Alameda – Ten-year-old Travis Winn likely exudes more confidence than some professional golfers.

Earlier this week, at the 72nd Annual East Bay Junior Golf Tournament at the Chuck Corica Golf Complex in Alameda, the Hollister golf product found himself ahead by one stroke heading to the 17th hole against Brandon Wu of San Ramon.

Wu made up the one-stroke deficit on 17, however, and after the two broke even on 18, a playoff was in their sights.

Despite just losing the lead on the previous hole, though, Winn didn’t seem to lose his confidence.

“There wasn’t that much pressure. I knew I could beat him,” Winn said. “It was really big. I came really close last year, and I wanted to beat Brandon, so it was pretty big.”

Winn, who finished second to Wu at last year’s East Bay Junior, would par the par-4 playoff hole while Wu bogeyed, giving Winn yet another plaque and golf bag that he can add to his already massive collection of accolades.

Winn’s two-day score of 72 (nine holes on each day) in the 10- and 11-year-old division beat out some 14 other contestants.

“It’s one of the premier tournaments of the Junior Golf Association of Northern California,” said Mike Winn, Travis’ father.

The two-day tournament took place on Monday and Tuesday on the back nine holes of the Jack Clark Golf Course and the Earl Fry Golf Course at the Chuck Corica Golf Complex.

Both golfers shot a 72, with Winn shooting a 1-over-par 36 on the Jack Clark course, and a par-36 on Earl Fry. Wu shot a par-35 at Jack Clark, and a 1-over-par 37 on the second day at Earl Fry.

Winn said the course at Earl Fry was in good condition, adding, “I was doing really good that day with my wedges, and my putting, and my driving. Basically, I was doing everything good that day.”
