A Hollister woman was seriously injured in a weekend accident at Fourth and Powell streets when the car she was riding in ran a stop sign and was broadsided.

Claudia Ramirez, 22, of Hollister was airlifted to a San Jose hospital where she is being treated for a possible head injury, bleeding from the mouth and slipping in and out of consciousness, Hollister Police said.

Ramirez was injured in a 10:10 a.m. accident Saturday when the 1983 Honda Accord in which she was a passenger was northbound on Powell Street, police said.

The vehicle, driven by Rosindo Ramirez, 24, of Hollister, failed to stop for the stop sign at the Fourth Street intersection, police said.

As the Honda entered the intersection it crossed directly in front of a westbound Toyota 4-Runner driven by Lizzette Ortiz, 34, of Hollister, police said.

Ortiz could not stop in time to avoid the collision and struck the passenger side of the Ramirez’s vehicle at an unknown speed, police said.

Emergency crews worked for about 15 minutes to extract Claudia Ramirez from the badly mangled car, witnesses said. She was taken to Hazel Hawkins Hospital where her condition was stabilized, then taken to San Jose by a Calstar helicopter.

Ortiz, who complained of pain in her back and other areas, declined medical aid at the scene and chose to seek treatment on her own, police said.
