Junior Davila compiled a 6-1 record, finished third overall at 119 pounds, and helped lead the San Benito High wrestling team to a 46th place finish out of 97 teams at the 2009 Asics Sierra Nevada Classic in Reno last week.

Davila, who earned the No. 5 seed in his bracket, won his first three matches by either fall or technical fall. He defeated Joshua Ehinger of Santiago by a 17-1 technical fall to open the tournament, then dispatched Austin Brown of Carson City, Nev. (1:58) and Chris Culver of Illinois Valley, Ore. (2:20), each by pin.

Davila then earned an 8-5 decision over No. 4 seed Tanner Feuerstein of Central Catholic to advance to the final four at 119 pounds. But up against top-seeded Isa Hurtado of Sheldon in the semifinals, Davila finally lost his first match of the tournament with a difficult 11-9 decision.

The San Benito senior rebounded in the consolation bracket, however. Davila defeated Tryin Stevenson of McKinleyville by a 10-4 decision before topping Feuerstein again in the third-place consolation match, this time by a narrow 4-3 decision.

Davila was the lone placer for San Benito, which compiled 62 points at the two-day tournament. The Balers finished better than other Central Coast Section teams like Palo Alto (49th, 53.5 points) and Palma (71st, 33 points), and just 15 points out of a top-25 spot.

Meanwhile, Buchanan High earned first place with 185 points, well ahead of second-place finisher Moses Lake, Wash. (163.5 points). Bellarmine was 23rd with 81.5 points, while Los Gatos was 38th with 66.5 points.

San Benito head coach Brian DeCarli could not be reached for comment at press time.

Davila’s 6-1 record was the bright spot for the Balers, though. San Benito’s Nikko Espinoza was 4-2 overall at 130 pounds, but did not place after he lost his very first match — a pigtail bout with Kyle Wade of Madera South.

Espinoza won his next four matches in the consolation bracket before falling to No. 5 seed Andy Kreidle of Los Gatos by pin (:41).

At 160 pounds, Justin Raine went 3-2, but he too lost his very first match of the tournament. Robb Rodriguez at 112 pounds and Mikey Soto at 140 pounds posted 2-2 records at the Reno invitational.

The Balers will return from tournament action on Wednesday night at Mattson Gym, where they will host North Salinas at 6:30 p.m.
