Day 1 of the two-day Central Coast Section Wrestling Championships is complete and just five of San Benito’s 13 wrestlers remain, with only one wrestler still competing in the championship bracket.

At 189 pounds, San Benito No. 4-seed Miguel Martin del Campo will begin the second day of the CCS Championships in a semifinal bout against top-seeded Logan Kellogg of San Lorenzo Valley. The winner will advance to the 189-pound final against either Josh Castillo of Watsonville or Danny Chaid of Bellarmine, and will also earn at least a top-three placing as well as a trip to the state tournament.

Martin del Campo received a bye to open Friday’s action, then won his next two bouts to advance to the semifinal round. He defeated Gabe Flores of Sacred Heart by fall (1:31) and Keaton Klockow of Pacific Grove by a 6-0 decision to cap the first day.

However, Martin del Campo is the lone Baler remaining in the championship bracket.

Robb Rodriguez at 119 pounds, Raul Suarez at 125s, Zack Rodriguez at 135s and Mikey Soto at 140s all remain in contention for a state bid, but will all begin competition on Saturday in the consolation bracket.

With only the top three places in each weight class advancing to state, Suarez, Soto and the Rodriguez brothers will need to win their respective consolation bracket in order to qualify to the state tournament.

Suarez lost his first match of the day, but has since won two straight bouts and will open Saturday’s action against junior Dominic Revilla of Sacred Heart.

Meanwhile, Soto dropped his quarterfinal match by a 1-0 decision to Amir Bakhshi of Cupertino — a match that would have advanced Soto to the semifinal round. Instead, the San Benito senior will open Saturday in the consolation bracket against Los Altos senior Wesley Oribello.

Robb Rodriguez also lost his quarterfinal match at 119 pounds when he fell to top-seeded Kaelob Obien of Independence by a 2-1 decision. Rodriguez will square off against Joey Christophers of Palo Alto to open Saturday’s matches.

Older brother Zack Rodriguez, too, lost his quarterfinal match by a late fall (5:58) to Matthew Potter of Willow Glen. He’ll open Saturday in the consolation bracket against Jordan Servito of Lynbrook.

As a team, San Benito is in eighth place entering Day 2 with 48.5 points. Gilroy (129.5), St. Francis (93.5) and Bellarmine (72) own the top three spots.

San Benito had seven wrestlers eliminated from competition on Day 1, including Chris Baldwin (112), Dominic Cortes (130), Greg Landry (145), Jonathan Arballo (152), Nick Mendizabal (160), Joey Garcia (171) and Javier Bustillos (215). Tony Gatto, who was expected to compete at 103 pounds, was not listed.

Wrestling will commence at 10 a.m. Saturday with the finals set for 7 p.m. at Independence High School.
