WATSONVILLE

Jay Garcia at 132 pounds and Javier Bustillos at 217 pounds each took second place in their respective weight classes during Saturday’s individual rounds at the Apple Cider Classic, the Balers went 3-1 during the team tournament on Friday to finish in third place, and three other wrestlers competed at the ultra-elite Doc Buchanan Invitational in Clovis on Friday in what was a split weekend for the San Benito High wrestling team.

Kenny Salcedo, Mikey Soto and Zack Rodriguez each tried their hand at the Doc Buchanan Invitational, a tournament that included 12 teams that are currently ranked within the top 20 in the state, including the top seven ranked teams, according to The California Wrestler.

San Benito head coach Brian DeCarli said only Rodriguez was able to pocket a win, though, going 1-2 at the tournament. Both Soto and Salcedo finished with 0-2 records.

The three wrestlers did not compete at the Apple Cider Classic in Watsonville as a result, where San Benito went 3-1 in the team portion of the tournament on Friday, losing to a Palma team that it had defeated somewhat convincingly 49-21 earlier in the week.

Alisal earned the team title on Friday.

Individually, Jay Garcia and Javier Bustillos each advanced to the finals in their respective weight classes before falling.

At 132 pounds, Garcia beat Kevin Feeley of Aptos by fall (:28) and Ralphy Ortega-Retiz of Christopher by fall (1:38) in the first two rounds before advancing to the semifinals with an 8-4 decision over Westmont’s Kyle Young.

Garcia then defeated North Salinas’ Lawrence Combs by fall to advance to the title match against Gilroy’s Aaron Gonzales, but the San Benito middleweight’s run ended there. Gonzales pinned Garcia at the 5:31 mark of the third round.

It was a similar run for Bustillos at the upper weights. The 217-pounder won his first four matches, defeating Westmont’s Christian Haro by fall, Austin Escobedo of Menlo-Atherton by a 9-3 decision, Gerald Omictin of North Salinas by fall (2:48) and Leland’s Nick Lee by a 6-5 decision to advance to the title round.

But Bustillos met his match in the 217-pound final, falling to Mount Pleasant’s Scott Brazil by pin one minute into the first round.

Meanwhile, Miguel Martin del Campo compiled a 4-1 record to finish in fourth place at 191 pounds. Martin del Campo won his first three matches — two by fall — before running into San Lorenzo Valley’s Logan Kellog in the semifinal round.

Kellog is the defending Central Coast Section champion at 189 pounds, and defeated Martin del Campo by a 6-3 decision in the semifinals. The San Benito senior then rebounded with a win by pin over Seaside’s Joseph Tuiolosega, but lost his final match to Overfelt’s Pean Saetern in the third- and fourth-place consolation match.

Baler Robb Rodriguez, meanwhile, took sixth place at 127 pounds after winning his first three matches by fall.

San Benito will return to league action on Wednesday when it will travel to North Salinas, and will return to tournament action on Saturday with an all-day invitational at Gilroy’s Christopher High.
