After suffering a 39-25 dual-meet defeat to Alisal last Wednesday, the San Benito wrestling team rebounded to take first place out of 28 teams at the Jim Root Classic in San Jose last weekend.
San Benito edged South San Francisco by 1.5 points.
“It was a big rebound,” San Benito head coach Brian DeCarli said.
The Balers brought nine wrestlers and had eight make it to the podium, including both Robb Rodriguez at 112 pounds and Junior Davila at 119 pounds. Both grapplers posted perfect 4-0 records and took first place in their respective weight classes at the tournament.
Meanwhile, Niko Espinoza (125 pounds) and Adam Davis (215s) each compiled 3-1 records to take second place overall, while both Edgar Ortega (130s) and Tim Christenson (140s) went 4-1 to each grab third place in their weight classes.
At 135 pounds, Eric Henry went 3-2 to finish in fourth, and Miguel Martin del Campo went 3-2 at 189 pounds to take seventh.
In other news, the San Benito frosh/soph team finished first overall at its tournament in Los Gatos last weekend.
“It was a very positive weekend for the whole program,” DeCarli said.
San Benito will be back in action on Tuesday night when it will host Everett Alvarez at 6:30 p.m.
