Hawks fall behind 3-0, can’t complete comeback
MONTEREY

Down 3-0 at halftime to host York, the Anzar High boys soccer team scored two quick goals in the second half Wednesday but couldn’t punch in the tying point and the Hawks lost their first game in Coastal Athletic League play, 3-2.

Anzar is now 4-1 in the CAL, 4-2 overall.

Hawks head coach Carlos Zepeda was concerned coming into the match after his team had difficulty on Monday in a 3-2 victory over Calvary Christian.

“I told the guys to step it up and in the first half, we did not,” Zepeda said.

York scored three times in the first 15 minutes, with goals coming at the 3rd, 8th and 15th minutes.

“The problem is a lack of focus ,” Zepeda said. “They make mistakes that we work on in practice, and those mistakes cost them goals today.”

Anzar’s Juan Carlos Vega made the game interesting, however. The freshman forward scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season in the 50th and 60th minutes, respectively, cutting into York’s comfortable three-goal lead.

The 3-2 deficit was as close as Anzar would get, however.

“This kid’s phenomenal,” Zepeda said of Vega. “We were pressuring real well, but the last goal just wouldn’t go in.

“I thought we were going to tie it up because we scored so quickly in the second half. But the tying goal just wouldn’t go in.”

Despite the loss, Zepeda highlighted the play of Alexis Sicairos on defense. Sicairos, the Hawks’ second leading scorer, was moved back to sweeper in the second half and “helped out a lot.”

Anzar will return to the pitch Saturday when Pacific Grove visits San Juan Bautista at 12 p.m. Anzar was originally scheduled to play Pacific Grove last Friday, but inclement weather postponed the contest to this weekend.

Although it’ll be the third game this week for the Hawks, it’ll be the third game in as many days for the Breakers. Pacific Grove plays host to Calvary Christian on Thursday and at Marina on Friday before visiting San Juan Bautista on Saturday.

“It’ll be tough, but it’ll be tough for them because they play Thursday, Friday and Saturday,” Zepeda said. “It’ll be tough for us, because we need to overcome this loss.”
