Marissa Brennan, of Pet Friends, explained that the first wag N Walk event last year on June 13 was a project for the San Benito Leadership Class of 2009. A few of the people running the event, including Brennan, decided to continue the project.

The event earned $6,437 last year, Brennan said. Pet Friends has the goal of at least $6,000 for this year.

“We are anticipating opening the new low cost Spay/Neuter Clinic in July at the Pet Friends facility,” Brennan said. “There is a need for this clinic in San Benito County. We have an overpopulation of cats and abandon animals.”

The annual cost of operating a Spay/Neuter Clinic is approximately $60,000 Brennan added.

“The Wag N Walk is one of the many fundraisers to help with the anticipated cost of running the clinic,” Brennan said. “This event allows pet owners to support a good cause and be able to bring their favorite four-legged friend.”

Participants are not required to bring a pet, but those without a pet are encouraged to be there by 9 a.m. to start their run.

“Your participation helps benefit Pet Friends,” Brennan said.

If participants choose to bring a pet it must be on a leash.

“Last year we had great responses after the event (from people) hoping that we continue it every year,” she said. “It would be great to have even more people participate this year.”

Sponsorship opportunities are still available, and for those unable to participate, donations are always welcome, Brennan said.

“Sponsorship money is way down at this time,” she said. “I’m not sure if we will be able to make a profit.”
