As a lead up to their showdown with Salinas on Friday, the San Benito boys and girls swim teams dispatched Christopher easily Wednesday.

Despite grabbing only one Central Coast Section-qualifying time, the Balers’ girls team beat the Cougars 128-48 and the boys won 132-52.

The girls 400-meter freestyle relay gave the Balers the only CCS time of the day as swimmers Caitlin Schafer, Rachel Estep, Hayley Larson and Katarina Ortiz finished with a time of 3:58.09.

“It was a great meet for us,” head coach Christine Schafer said. “It was a fun meet and it prepared us for Salinas on Friday.”

The winner of Friday’s meet will be alone in first place in the Tri-County Athletic League.

The Balers host Salinas at 3:30 p.m. Friday at San Benito High.

SBHS Tennis

In the last home non-league match of the year, the San Benito boys tennis squad mixed up its lineup for the second time in a row to give younger players the opportunity to play as singles, head coach Chris Yoder said.

With the changes Wednesday, San Benito beat Aptos 4-3 at the Ridgemark Tennis Center.

In his first singles match of the year, San Benito’s Sonny Singh won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Singh was the only Baler to win a singles match.

San Benito swept the doubles competition, led by seniors Kyle Skinner and Eric Johnson.

Skinner and Johnson, who were doubles partners last year, teamed up to win 6-2, 6-2.Geoff Muzik and Jacob Panger won the No. 2 doubles match in a third-game tie breaker 5-7, 6-1, 10-5. Finally, Simon Coehlo and Travis Mills won the final match of the day 6-4, 6-4.

With a win Thursday over Alvarez, San Benito clinches the TCAL Mountain Division championship.
