Facing a Soquel team that has won its water polo league every year since 1995, the San Benito boys team struggled to find any consistency during Thursday’s season opener.

It was a wake up call for the Balers in the Monterey Bay League opener, as San Benito lost 19-3 to Soquel at Cabrillo College.

Led by Max Somple, Jack Pickard and Max Draga, Soquel scored seven first quarter goals to build it’s lead. Eventually, blowing away San Benito.

“There isn’t much to say,” San Benito head coach Aaron Gautney said. “We are going to have to get better at some things if we are going to compete.”

Last year’s leading scorer Jake Garcia added a goal for San Benito in the loss. Returnee Adrian Gonzalez also scored.

The Balers will try to get into the winning column Saturday during a San Benito-hosted eight-team tournament. The Balers’ first game begins at 7:30 a.m.
