Never before has there been a central home for San Benito County’s cherished sports scene. Not until this weekend’s launch of the San Benito Score website, SBCSCORE.com.

The Free Lance and Weekend Pinnacle have created this dynamic, daily interaction with fans of the many sports played in San Benito County.

As everyone here knows, there is a wide diversity of athletic interests in the community. San Benito County residents’ pride in their sports is endless: Football, baseball, softball, rodeo, wrestling, soccer, basketball, swimming, water polo, mixed martial arts, gymnastics, tennis, auto racing.

You name, and we love it.

And now there is one home for all of the local action.

“The idea evolved from the popularity of sports editor Andrew Matheson’s weekly video show, shot on-location so to speak,” said Steve Staloch, publisher of the Free Lance and Pinnacle. “He’s done an outstanding job of presenting local sporting news in a fresh and exciting format, so we took that seed and built what I believe is as good local sport site as you’ll see in any community.”

The story continues below this video of the latest Score episode.

The new website will include weekly updates of the only sports show dedicated to San Benito County – “The Score” – brought to you for the past 18 months by two award-winning journalists, the host Matheson and producer Nick Lovejoy.

That is just the start, though.

A big focus for the website is its interactivity with viewers. There is a feature called “Submit Your Score” that allows users to do just that, instantly relay and self-publish the latest results for area teams.

There is another new tool for the sports community called “u2us” that allows viewers to provide their own video coverage that posts on SBCSCORE.com.

The “Coach’s Corner” – which will debut this week – is a new video feature. In it, the site will provide interviews and advice from many different San Benito County coaches.

The “Highlight Reel” is a regular rotation of highlights from the latest performances by local teams or athletes.

Additionally, SBCSCORE.com will include special bonus photos from Lovejoy that you can’t find anywhere else, along with an archive of past San Benito Score episodes.

“The San Benito Score (www.sbcscore.com) is truly a hybrid concept devoted entirely to San Benito County sports, from T-ball to high school to city league,” Staloch said. “Featuring video highlights, photos and the latest scores, the site is easy to navigate and is constantly updated with fresh content. The Score includes interactive features that allow coaches and sports enthusiasts alike to post scores, comment on almost anything, and follow local sports tweets.”

The newspaper’s editor, Kollin Kosmicki, stressed how the goal is to make the local sports community feel at home.

“Above all, we want residents to feel like this is their website,” he said.
