Local golfer John Ellis shot a 3-over 74 in his opening round at the 111th U.S. Open Championship on Thursday at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.

Ellis, 31, started his round on the back nine and endured an up-and-down journey to the turn, fighting off bogeys at No. 11, 13, 14 and 18 with birdies on No. 15 and 16.

The Live Oak grad and Gavilan alum played his second nine holes at 1-over, sandwiching a birdie on the 173-yard, par-3 seventh between a pair of bogeys on No. 5 and No. 8.

Ellis, a Morgan Hill native, will pick up with Michael Whitehead and Will Wilcox at 11:52 a.m. on Friday.
