With all of the upgrades at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital,
there is a necessity for some safety improvements on Sunset Drive,
as the city will install a lighted crosswalk.
The project costs
– estimated at $63,000 with contingencies after an approval of
the lowest bid by Republic ITS – will be covered by the Council of
San Benito County Governments ($36,000) and the hospital ($27,000),
according to a city staff report.

The city noted how there are two facilities on each side of the road and a high volume of patients, nurses, support staff and doctors using the crosswalk between Airline Highway and Memorial Drive at the main driveway to the campus. The installation of an in-ground lighted crosswalk is meant to “provide advanced warning to the motoring public of a pedestrian in the crosswalk,” according to the report.

The city is administering the project and has provided design and project management.
