The San Juan Bautista City Council is checking references on four interim city manager candidates and was scheduled to meet in closed session July 7 to discuss whether to hire one of them.

After narrowing a pool of 18 applicants to a group of five finalists, one applicant backed out after they got a job in another city, Mayor Andy Moore said on Tuesday.

Each council member is checking employment and personal references for the finalists for the $85,000-per-year job, which was left open by the resignation of Steven Julian in May.

Moore said he could not identify the applicants at this point, though he did say some were from “within the area.”

The council might have a candidate selected by this week, Moore said, but if not, “we’re getting down to the home stretch. Hopefully we’ll come to a conclusion soon.”
