The Balers celebrate after beating Palma 13-12 Friday night to claim the TCAL title and go a perfect 6-0 in league play.

Football coaches from the Monterey Bay Athletic League and the Tri-County Athletic League met earlier this week and voted on the placement of the leagues’ teams in next year’s equity league.

The unnamed league will divide the schools into two leagues – an upper and lower division – TCAL and MBL commissioner Tim McCarthy said. Each sport will have different teams in each division, based on the quality of the program and its future.

After winning the final football TCAL championship, San Benito was elected to Division A, with rivals Palma, Gilroy and Salinas. Also elected to the higher division were MBL schools Christopher, North County and Monterey.

Alisal, Alvarez, Monte Vista, North Salinas, Pajaro Valley, Seaside and Watsonville were selected to the lower Division B.

In the first of three steps, the coaches created their recommendations Wednesday but they still need approval from each school’s athletic director, McCarthy said. Once the athletic directors approve or change the coaches’ recommendations, the league must be approved by the board of directors.

The board’s next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 6. McCarthy hopes to have the league for each fall sport completed at that time.

“That’s the date we’re aiming for,” he said.
