A woman fell about 15 feet off a rock ledge at Fremont Peak on Friday afternoon, causing unknown injuries and prompting a rescue from local and state authorities, according to the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office.

The fall occurred around 1:15 p.m. Friday. A local woman who had been rock climbing fell off the rock ledge, and family members immediately called 911. A state park ranger who was first on scene started treating her.

Firefighters gained access to the victim about 100 feet up the hill from the closest road. With the terrain “very rocky” and with about a 45-degree slope, fire personnel safely lowered the victim down the terrain to waiting medical responders, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

Responders treated the victim, who was transported by Calstar to a Bay Area hospital. Her condition Monday morning was unclear.

Those responding to the fall included the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit, California State park rangers, Calfire, AMR and the San Juan Volunteer Fire Department.

According to the statement: “The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank all the first responders for their immediate response and team work to treat the victim. The Sheriff’s Office would also like to remind everyone visiting our State or National Parks to be aware of the safety risks of climbing in steep areas, never hike alone and have a plan if injury occurs.”
