Reader likes idea of merging departments
Dear Editor,
I’m for merging the Hollister Police and the Sheriff’s Department.
Among other benefits of the merger, the amount saved should be nearly enough to reinstate the Street Sweeper at least during the leaf dropping season.

Poverty gains are just too slow
Dear Editor,
In 1960 40 million Americans lived in poverty, a 22% rate. John Kennedy said, “We can no longer tolerate growing patches of poverty and injustice in America.” Five Republican presidents, Lyndon Johnson, who launched “The War On Poverty” in 1964 and brought Americans Medicare plus four other Democratic presidents bring our nation to 46.2 million Americans living in poverty, a 15.1% rate. This is an improvement of .14% per year, even slower than the economic recovery for America’s working families. Republican success in redistribution of America’s wealth to the 1% while blocking efforts to help the bottom 90% of Americans has resulted in painfully slow progress.
