Hollister council members at their Monday night meeting agreed to update the city’s policy for use of the 400 block of San Benito Street to ban cooking devices on the grassy area due to burn spots showing up after events there.
The city policy now states: “BBQ’s, cooking, and generators are prohibited on the lawn.” It adds to a bullet-point list that includes 18 other rules such as the users having to be a local nonprofit organizations and a requirement for fencing around any event with minors.
City Clerk Geri Johnson said the idea for a new provision came about because the grass “has been burnt a couple times,” though she declined to name the events at which it occurred.
The previous policy for the use of the 400 block had been adopted in 2001, according to city records.
