Perhaps as no surprise, Tuesday’s San Benito-Salinas Tri-County Athletic League dual meet came down to the very last event — the boys 4×400 relay race.
After all, it was the same scenario last season.
“It’s been very much the same three of the last four years,” San Benito boys coach Iran White said.
Of course, how it ended on Tuesday wasn’t anything like the previous year.
Needing a victory in the relay to claim the dual meet outright, San Benito trailed Salinas through three legs of the 1,600-meter relay. And when Baler Jason Roascio, the anchor leg, received the baton for the fourth and final lap, he trailed his Cowboy counterpart by roughly 50 meters, White said.
“And he ran him down,” White added. “It was incredible. It was probably the fastest he’s run this season.”
Roascio closed the gap on the final lap and helped San Benito not only take first place in the 4×400 relay but also the dual meet, as the Balers staved off Salinas 73-63.
The Balers clocked a 3:27.83 in the 4×400, edging Salinas’ 3:28.18.
White said he could have been “caught up in the moment” as to the distance Roascio made up in the final lap, but said the San Benito junior’s split time was at least faster than his time at the Stanford Invitational, when he clocked a 47.5.
The San Benito Lady Balers, meanwhile, defeated Salinas in their dual meet on Tuesday by a score of 72-64.
The Lady Balers swept the 1,600 meters when Michelle Duarte (5:22.90), Vanessa Estrada (5:26.64) and Maura Forbush (5:29.35) finished 1-2-3, while Duarte (2:29.14) and Forbush (2:31.84) also went 1-2 in the 800.

Danielle Acosta pitched six scoreless innings, Jessica Steigelman connected on a three-run homer, and the San Benito Lady Balers defeated North Salinas 10-0 on Monday in Tri-County Athletic League action.
The game was called in the sixth inning due to the 10-run rule.
After San Benito took a 1-0 lead in the first when Mari Vallejo scored on a pass ball, Steigelman made it a 4-0 cushion later in the inning with a three-run blast that plated Jessica Vest and Marissa Adame.
Meanwhile, the pitcher Acosta allowed four hits and three walks, striking out four in the process.
The Lady Balers are now 6-0 in the TCAL, 17-2 overall. San Benito’s scheduled contest against Salinas on Wednesday was held after The Weekend Pinnacle’s press time.
