Playing together for the second straight year, the Hollister Tremors 10U Aftershocks took second place at the CASA Adidas Championship Cup in Rancho Cordova last weekend, finishing runner-up to Sacramento’s San Juan Spirit Blue by a narrow 2-1 margin.

The Aftershocks won three straight games to open the tournament, winning their flight and advancing to Sunday’s championship in the process. But the team’s hot streak fell short in the final.

Nevertheless, the Aftershocks still received second-place medals, and still outscored its four opponents by an 18-7 margin.

“We’re working on our second year together, and they’re doing great,” said Aftershocks coach David Lowi, who manages the team alongside Adolfo Laguna. “We’re going up against some other cities where they start (playing soccer) at a much younger age.”

The Hollister 10U team, which is part of the San Benito Youth Soccer League, opened the six-team tournament last Saturday with a convincing 8-0 victory over Sacramento’s San Juan Spirit White, then edged the host team, Boca, by a tight 5-4 score.

The two victories supplied Hollister with the top seed in Flight A.

The Aftershocks then squared off against the Sacramento United Extreme, which was the No. 2 seed to emerge from Flight B. The semifinal matchup turned out to be rather one-sided, though, as Hollister rolled to a 4-1 win over the Extreme to advance to the championship game against the San Juan Spirit Blue.

The second-place finish for the Aftershocks comes on the heels of several strong showings, dating back to last fall when the squad, then as a 9U team, won the Delgado District II League after compiling a 7-1-2 record during the regular season, as well as a perfect record at its end-of-year jamboree in Palo Alto.

The Aftershocks also went 8-0 during their indoor soccer season in Watsonville, took third during June’s Spring Cup in Hollister, and finished in fifth place during the Delgado District II League’s spring season.

The Aftershocks are gearing up for their 10U fall season on Sept. 11, when they will be competing in the Coast Silver division.

“This year, we should have another strong year taking on some of the top teams in the Bay Area,” Lowi said.
