The Gavilan College women’s volleyball team played ungracious
host Saturday at the Gavilan College Classic, registering two
victories in the squad’s final batch of games before the start of
conference play. The Rams defeated College of the Siskiyous in four
sets (25-18, 25-18, 24-26, 25-22) and Columbia in three (25-16,
25-10, 25-20), finishing their non-conference schedule with a 7-4
record.

“The girls are starting to figure out the tempo of the game,” said head coach Kevin Kramer, whose team has rebounded from an 0-3 start to the year with triumphs in seven of its last eight matches. “The girls are coming together. Our offense is clicking. We are pretty much even across the board on who can contribute.”
A pair of freshmen led the way offensively for the Rams in Game 1 as Avry Walker posted a team-high 17 kills followed closely by Emily Tonascia with 14 kills. Melissa Avila had 38 assists, nine digs, three kills and three blocks.
Jaclyn Lantis paced the Rams in Game 2 with eight kills and K.C. Beadle tallied seven kills in the three-set sweep. Shayna Nakata came away with 13 digs from the back row.
The Rams begin their quest to defend their 2009 Coast Conference championship against Hartnell on Friday. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. at Gavilan.
