Despite being limited to just a single goal in its season opener on Tuesday, the San Benito girls soccer team managed to unleash a six-goal onslaught on host San Lorenzo Valley Thursday.

The non-conference matchup witnessed the Balers jump out to a semi-comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime, then tack on four more scores en route to a 6-0 victory.

Karly Leon and Sara Yamasaki each had two goals apiece, while Kelly Gottron had two assists in the lopsided win.

San Benito is now 2-0 on the early season, while San Lorenzo Valley falls to 3-1-1.

Head coach Ben Alvarez said nothing was changed from the team’s previous contest on Tuesday, a 1-0 victory over Pioneer. It was just that San Benito’s shots were finding the back of the net.

“We did the same exact thing against Pioneer,” said Alvarez, whose team cycled through 4-4-2 and 3-4-3 formations.

Alvarez later added, “We always kept them guessing.”

San Benito took a 1-0 lead just 12 minutes in when Gottron set up Leon for the game’s first goal, while Gottron added a score 10 minutes later off an assist from Yamasaki.

In the 50th minute, Leon scored her second goal of the game, with an assist from Jessica Sanchez. Gottron then had her second assist of the game, setting up Tori Perez in the 55th minute, while Yamasaki scored in the 69th and 75th minutes off assists from Desiree Martin and Daniela Ocampo, respectively.

“Our passing was very, very good today,” said Alvarez, noting the slick, wet artificial turf the two teams played on.

“But the passing was precise,” he added.

Shots on goal also ended with a lopsided margin, falling in favor of the Balers. San Benito took 17 shots on net to San Lorenzo Valley’s 1, with goalie Anissa Stanton making the lone save for the Balers.

San Benito (2-0) will continue its non-conference slate on Saturday when it will square off against Milpitas on the road. Kickoff is 11 a.m.
