A Celebration of Life will be held from 1:00 P.M.- 4:00 P.M., Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Tasso’s Old House Restaurant in Gilroy.
Teodoro/Theodore “Ted” Chavez, son of Jose Severo and Adelaida Lopez Chavez was born in Gallup, New Mexico in September 14 or 15, 1920, a home birth with no physician or midwife. Upon his birth, he was placed in a shoebox on the windowsill, unsure if he’d make it. Astoundingly, Ted was likely Adelaida’s 19th birth. He had nine brothers, 11 sisters and was the last surviving member of his generation.
Ted served our community in many capacities, he founded the former Gilroy Youth Center, was a Veteran of WWII, a member of the Gilroy Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Optimists Club and a little league baseball coach. He was a partner in T&R Paint Co., painting hundreds of public and commercial buildings, residences & municipal facilities in Gilroy.
He was pre-deceased by his wife, Alberta Leora Talley and sisters Inez, Sally, Susie, Sylvia, Ester, Fela, Inez and Cecilia and brothers Lorenzo, Bennie and Simon. He leaves his children Ted and Lynn Chavez of Aptos, Christopher “Jack” and Kathleen Chavez of Gilroy, Carol Shepard of Manteca, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
