Caltrans review was above-board
The Opinion of
Richard Krumholz,
Caltrans District 5 Director
As Caltrans District 5 Director, I would like readers to know that the department’s environmental review and approval of the San Benito Route156 Improvements Project was lengthy, thorough and complied with all applicable state and federal laws.
This included the active participation of, and partnership with the County of San Benito Council
of Governments, as well as solicitation of public input from concerned community members and the Board of Supervisors regarding the various alternatives shown in our detailed environmental document.
Nevertheless, in a recent guest column, Marty Richman attempts to revisit Caltrans’ completed environmental process by leveling criticisms
against Caltrans, local authorities and the project itself. He fails to recognize that Caltrans agreed to participate in the July 16 Project Update to provide the current status of this important highway
improvement.
Any characterization of Caltrans’ completed environmental process as secretive or a violation of the public trust is incorrect.
The bottom line is that the San Benito Route 156 Improvement Project is an essential safety, operational and congestion-relieving transportation project that will improve the quality of life for all communities in San Benito County.
