With the number home burglaries up, the Hollister Police Department has reminded citizens of some tips for safety and to assist police in catching suspects.
This year the department has seen an increase in residential burglaries or attempts. Recently, residents have been calling to report people knocking on doors or ringing door bells and then going to the back of houses to try to gain entry, according to a department press release.
Police offered the following tips:
Call 911 immediately.
Remove yourself from the immediate danger area and into a safe area.
Be prepared to provide a suspect’s description, direction of travel and vehicle description
Overall, keep your safety in mind.
Citizens can lower the risk of burglaries by doing the following:
Secure all entry and exit ways.
Invest in motion-activated lights, alarms and guard dogs.
Talk to your neighbors for support.
Keep valuables and money in a safe or a safe-deposit box.
Make arrangements to have someone pick up your mail and newspaper when you’re away.
Record the brands and serial numbers of all electronics and bicycles.
