Cold weather hits South County
Where did all of our spring weather go? It was down right cold
out here last week. Frost was on the ground and it seemed like the
middle of December instead of the first of April! Hopefully we’ll
get some April showers this week and some warm weather along with
it.
We received the sad news the other day that Bettie Schmidt
passed away. Bettie passed away at home on March 27; she would have
been 88 years old in April. Services will be held for Bettie on
Tuesday, April 8 at 11 a.m. at Hollister United Methodist Church on
Monterey Street, followed by a luncheon at the church. Memorials in
Bettie’s name may be sent to Hospice, VNA or the church. Bettie is
survived by her husband, Bob, son Ted (Diane) Schmidt and caregiver
Maggie. Bettie will be missed by so many, and our sincerest
condolences go out to Bob and the entire family.

Nessen Schmidt hosted a barbecue last Thursday at his home for former King City residents Dale and Destre Shelley. Dale worked at the Topo Ranch more than 10 years ago before moving his family back to his native state of New Mexico. We hadn’t seen them since they left here with their infant son, Tate, who is now 12 years old and 6 feet tall! I thought Todd Jr. was tall, but Todd’s older than Tate and about 5 inches shorter! Dale and Destre are both tall so it’s not a surprise he’s that big, but it was still a shock! Their other son, Holt, is 9 years old and in the fourth grade. I figured him to be in at least sixth or seventh grade and I about fell over when they said he was only 9 years old! It was sure nice to see them and get a chance to visit with them, they sure are a nice family and we sure wish they still lived here.

Birthday wishes go out to Cynnie O’Connor and Chase Barbree who both celebrated birthdays this week. Cynnie celebrated on March 30 while Chase celebrated on April 1. A barbecue was held at the O’Connor’s in Bitterwater to celebrate both birthdays. It was a fun day of visiting, card playing and skeet shooting. Birthday wishes also go out to Caroline Madson, who celebrated on March 30 as well.

The San Benito County Cattlemen’s Association held its annual reverse draw and dinner dance last Saturday night at Bolado Park. The evening was a big success with a lot of people enjoying the evening.
