The public is invited to the grand reopening of John Z. Hernandez Park at 4 p.m. Thursday at the corner of Ranchito Drive and Central Avenue.

San Benito County Public Works Staff Analyst Terry Hill said the old playground equipment was replaced with new equipment; benches were installed; trash bins were placed around the playground; and workers installed new irrigation, planters, fencing, tress and shrubs. Crews also removed the basketball court and replaced it with sod.

Hill said the park is geared toward children ages 3 to 5. The park sign has been relocated to the Central Avenue side, Hill said.

A state grant provided the county with $50,000 to install new playground equipment in partnership with the City of Hollister. The cost to remodel the park was about $46,000, Supervisor Jaime De La Cruz said. He and the city worked together on the project, he said.

Hill said the ceremony will be conducted by De La Cruz. It’s planned to have someone from the Hernandez family do the honors of cutting the ribbon, Hill said.

There will be light refreshments and a gift-basket raffle during the ceremony.
