The closure planned for this month at one of the city’s busiest intersections – at Airline Highway and Sunnyslope Road – will be delayed until the at least the first week of June, Transportation Planning Manager Mary Dinkuhn confirmed Thursday.

“We had some conflicts with some PG&E (Pacific Gas & Electric) utility vaults in the area that hadn’t been removed,” Dinkuhn said. “But school will be out at that point, so it will help with people walking and driving to school.”

The closure will last 30 days and is part of one of the final steps in completing the $49 million Highway 25 bypass project.

The intersection closure – near Safeway, Nob Hill and Target – is expected to cause major delays for drivers and pedestrians. The San Benito County Council of Governments has suggested that people allow at least 10 extra minutes to any trip near the intersection and to avoid it altogether if possible during the closure.

Dinkuhn said she would have a final date of when the construction would begin soon and that it would start “not any later” than the first week of June

Once the bypass is finished, it will feature six lanes of traffic running from Sunnyslope Road to East Park Street and four lanes of traffic running from East Park Street to Bolsa Road, along with six “signalized” intersections.
