Freitas Memorial Golf Tournament
The 2015 Kelly Freitas Memorial Golf Tournament at San Juan Oaks is set for July 10. This event is in memory of San Juan Oaks Director of Golf Manny Freitas’ wife Kelly who passed away in 2010 from breast cancer. Proceeds from the event go directly to the Kelly Freitas Memorial Scholarship Fund. The golf tournament begins with a noon shotgun start that includes music throughout the day, unique on-course games including the “High Heel Hole”, the “Fastest Hole” & “the “Blind Fold Hole”. The dinner party begins at 5 p.m. with a no-host cocktail hour, silent auction, raffle, games and live entertainment. Movies in the Park
The Hollister Recreation Division is hosting “Movies in the Park”—free showings July 17 and Aug. 7—at Dunne Park. The recreation division announced there will be showings of Big Hero 6 on July 17 and The Goonies on Aug. 7. At 5 p.m., there will be vendors and food trucks on site, and the movies will start at dusk. Dunne Park is at the corner of West and Seventh streets. Arts Council celebrates locals
The San Benito County Arts Council is celebrating regional culture with locally made art in a special exhibition called “Hollister made.” The pieces created by Hollister artists explore the car and bike culture, Mexican traditions and the area’s rural landscapes. They will be on display from June 26 through July 18 at the council’s new ArtSpace at 240 Fifth St. in downtown Hollister. The exhibition includes photography, paintings, sculptures, pen and ink work, and nontraditional art such as tattoos and graffiti. Knights of Columbus anniversary
Knights of Columbus San Benito Council 1792 is hosting a 100th Anniversary Dinner Dance on July 18 at O’Riley Hall, 680 College St., in Hollister. ‘Ocean’ presentation in SJB
Set for 1 p.m. July 20 at the San Juan Bautista Luck Library, 801 Second St., “The Ocean — Our Life Support System” is an experiential art and science installation designed to connect the public with the ocean through the breakthrough scientific findings of ocean research scientists. The intent of the exhibit is to go below the surface of the ocean and gain a better insight into the role the ocean plays as the heart and lungs of the planet. AMBAG Energy Watch and the HERO Program are inviting local contractors to attend a workshop 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. July 22 to learn about becoming a Registered HERO Contractor in the greater Monterey Bay region. The HERO Program is a residential and commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy financing program for property owners who want to implement energy efficiency, energy generation, and water efficiency projects. The Hollister Downtown Association is hosting the 29th Annual Street Festival, Car Show and Chili Cook Off on July 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Hollister. Hollister is hosting Capital Kings (Electronic Dance Music, pop rock, hip hop, rap), a music duo from Tennessee, in concert at the Veteran’s Memorial Building 649 San Benito St., Hollister, on July 25. MACE to honor Chavez
The Mexican American Committee on Education of San Benito County is hosting a tribute to Paul Chavez, the son of late farmworker rights advocate Cesar Chavez and chairman of the foundation bearing his father’s name. The local MACE chapter is hosting Paul Chavez, the foundation chairman, for a tribute recognition dinner along with a mariachi. Comedy benefit for Garcia boys
The Portuguese Kids comedy group has toured the U.S. They will be coming to Hollister on August 1 at the SDES Hall 675 Seventh St. They are preforming to assist the Garcia Boys with medical costs. Emilio 5 years of age and Marcos 2 years of age were both born with Neuromuscular disease that requires the need for them to have intense therapy so that they may reach their potential growth. Music at the Mission
On Aug 16, 4-6 p.m and 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., the splendor of the sanctuary at Mission San Juan Bautista, California’s treasured “Mission of Music,” Cabrillo Festival will celebrate its Grand Finale performances of the 2015 season. The program begins with Christopher Rouse’s Supplica, meaning “supplication” in Italian. Rouse provides audiences very little explanation of his influence, save to say that he felt an inner compulsion to write the work as an intimate and impassioned communication with meaning “that must remain personal. “Receiving its U.S. premiere is James MacMillan’s Epiclesis, a musical meditation on the mystery of the Eucharist and the idea of transformation of materials. “MacMillan writes brilliantly for brass. The trumpet is not used as a bravura expressionist, more as a virtuoso communicator,” wrote The Scotsman.
