Mileage rates up for IRS

OAKLAND – The IRS reimburses for the use of operating a vehicle for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes and in 2009 the rates will adjust. The new reimbursement rate is 55 cents per mile for business; 24 cents per mile for medical or moving purposes; and 14 cents per mile driven in service of a charitable organization.

The rates were highered in the second half of 2008 due to the spike in gasoline costs.

A taxpayer cannot use the business standard mileage rate for a vehicle after using any depreciation method under the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System or after claiming a secion 179 deduction for the vehicle. It can also not be used for any vehicle used for hire or for more than four vehicles used simultaneously.

Taxpayers can also calculate the actual cost of using their vehicle.

Choral project returns

HOLLISTER – The Choral Project returns for a local performance at 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, off Fairview Road.

The Choral Project is an internationally recognized choir. Admission is $10 at the door.

Pear Harbor remembrance

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – The San Juan Bautista Veterans of Foreign Wars post will honor veterans and present a ceremony in remembrance of the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

The observance begins at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at the post, 58 Monterey St., San Juan Bautista.

It was at 7:53 a.m. local time on Dec. 7, 1941, when planes descended on U.S. Naval facilities, launching events that would propel the United States into World War II, a conflict that ultimately cost more than a quarter-million Americans their lives. On Dec. 7 alone, more than 2, 400 men, women and children died.

Christmas choir concert

HOLLISTER – San Benito High School students will be singing a merry tune at their Christmas Choir Concert on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Admission is free.

Gavilan reviews local campus

GILROY – The Gavilan College Board of Trustees will meet at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 in the Student Center at Gavilan College to conduct a public hearing on a proposed Hollister area campus off Fairview Road.

The board is scheduled to consider certifying a final environmental impact report for the project before acting to approve plans for the local campus.

While plans call for the campus to be built in association with a residential development, the public hearing will only address the campus.

Livestock innovations on tour

HOLLISTER – Innovations in livestock properties and management will be on display during a free demonstration site tour on Thursday, Dec. 11, starting at 8:30 a.m.

The tour, sponsored by the San Benito County Resource Conservation District, includes bus transportation, lunch and refreshments.

The tour will showcase a manure bunker installation, paddock resurfacing, geo-textile installation, drainage restructuring, grassed filter strips and more.

Participants may be eligible to receive funds for property improvements. Residents of San Benito, Santa Cruz, southern Santa Clara and Monterey counties are eligible.

Backyard burn season begins

HOLLISTER – The annual backyard burn season for burning natural vegetaiton runs from Dec. 1 through April 30, 2009 in Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz counties. Residents of one-or-two family dwellings may burn clean and dry yard trimmings grown on property. Residents are required to check with the local fire agency to see if burning is allowed near their structure, and to secure necessary permits.

Burning cleared wood or brush from commercial or home development projects is allowed during the backyard burn season. A district smoke management permit is required.

To find which days are “burn days,” call the California Air Resources Board at 800-CAL-BURN (800-225-2876). The information is updated daily at 4 p.m. with forecasts for the following day. The board selects days when good smoke dipersion conditions are forecasted.

In addition, residents are encouraged to dispose of natural vegetation by alternative methods when possible, such as chipping, composting, or taking wood waste to landfills where it can be mulched or transported to facilities that burn wood waste to generate electricity.

How to capture the rain

HOLLISTER – Tips for designing and installing rainwater catchment systems will be the topic at a free seminar on Saturday, Dec. 13 from 8:30 a.m.-noon.

Bobby Markowitz, a landscape architect and local authority on water catchment systems will begin the day with a lecture, followed by a contractor-led, hands on demonstration on installing a cistern and its components. The day includes breakfast.

YMCA sign ups start

HOLLISTER – Open enrollment for YMCA’s elementary kickball program starts Dec. 15 for grades first through fifth. Super sports basketball signs ups start at the same time for 2 ½ to 5-year-olds. Other programs include outdoor hockey for sixth and eighth grades. All programs start in January.
