THUMBS UP: For former ‘Baler basketball standout Kyle Sharp, who is taking the NCAA’s big stage during March Madness. The hometown boy is on the Universtiy Montana Grizzlies basketball team, which has the No. 12 seed in the tournament. The team opened the tournament in stunning style with a win against No. 5 Nevada. “I was just really excited about everything that was happening. It was a rush,” Sharp said of playing in the game. It’s exciting to see a ‘Baler making good on a national level.
THUMBS DOWN: For members of the SEIU homecare workers union who crossed the line during their protest of Supervisor Pat Loe. The union protestors decided to demonstrate in front of Loe’s house against a 3 percent raise that the county supervisors offfered to homecare workers. Of course, peolpe have a right to demonstrate their frustration, but they went too far when some union members trespassed onto the supervisors’s lawn and even rang her door bell. Make your point, but don’t make it personal.
THUMBS UP: For San Benito County Ag Day, which provided an interesting and fun way for the county’s third-graders to learn about agriculture, where our food comes from and the importance of the county’s signature industry. The San Benito County Farm Bureau has been putting on Ag Day for 14 years, and Tuesday’s activities and exhibitions, held at Bolado Park, were the culmination of months of work by experienced volunteers whose goal it is to enlighten the county’s youth. Ag is pertinent to San Benito County, as it is to encourage the youth to take an interest at a young age.
THUMBS DOWN: For the Board of Supervisors and District Attorney John Sarsfield, for letting the shenanigans related to the Los Valientes civil rights lawsuit spiral so out of control that the district attorney doesn’t have enough money in his budget even to pay the electricity bills. Sarsfield is spending taxpayer dollars on matters not pertinent to public safety and the board has let the community down by failing to assert any leadership when it comes to the DA. And ultimately it is only the residents of this community who will suffer when crimes go unpunished and their tax dollars are wasted.
