Editor,
The Council of Government’s Directors recent majority (4-1) decision to reduce County Transit losses by 15 percent was a small step in the right direction.
While the directors’ decision was immediately ruled improper by its executive director and sustained by deputy county counsel on procedural grounds, a majority of COG’s directors have shown taxpayers that they do recognize the folly, wastefulness and fiscal irresponsibility of public-sector transit.
Big city urban mass transit models are despicable boondoggles in rural counties like ours, where most of our tax dollars are siphoned-away to San Francisco, LA and San Jose by the radical socialist big spenders in Sacramento.
The issue will be back on COG’s agenda this month, after proper notice as required by law, and should have the support of all small business, homeowners and taxpayers.
The real solution lies in privatization, e.g, contracting out as recommended by the Ad Hoc Reform Committee chaired by former Assemblyman and Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce CEO Jim Cunneen for effective Santa Clara valley Transportaton Authority reform.
VTA’s radical socialists rejected the proposal, so their $220 million annual operating deficit continues to mount.
But cities and counties around the nation have saved hundreds of millions of dollars by this method of privatization, and unless our leaders want San Benito County in bankruptcy court, we should join the privatization revolution.
The alternative is unacceptable fiscal disaster for our county. Please join me in requesting that COG steer us a course correction that will keep San Benito County solvent.
