A Hollister teen involved in a head-on accident Sunday night remains in critical condition at San Jose Medical Center.
Darios Ramirez, 18, suffered two fractured femurs and a fractured face when his 1995 Nissan collided head-on with 18-year-old Hollister resident Jorge Arturo Fernandez’s 2004 Honda Civic at a high rate of speed around 11 p.m. on Southside Road.
Ramirez is in the intensive care unit in San Jose, according to hospital personnel. His head trauma includes many broken bones in his face, including his skull and cheek bones, said California Highway Patrol Officer Terry Mayes.
Fernandez suffered a fractured femur and his condition doesn’t appear critical, Mayes said.
Neither Ramirez or Fernandez had ever been issued a driver’s license.
Ramirez was speeding on Southside Road, about 300 feet north of Bloom Lane, when he attempted to negotiate a turn but was unable to because of his car’s unknown elevated speed. He crossed over the double yellow line into the southbound lane, according to a CHP report.
Fernandez, who graduated from San Andreas School last year, tried to avoid a collision with Ramirez but was unable to.
Both men were wearing seat belts and were air-lifted to San Jose Medical Center.
