Thank you for an excellent article on why mountain lion management is needed and how it can be reinstituted.
You have concisely described a wildlife situation that, while unique to California in many respects, is more and more a serious issue in all states from Massachusetts to Washington and Florida. Whether the topic is citizen concern for black bears in Florida or beaver in Massachusetts or fur-bearing animals in Washington, misguided impediments to sound wildlife management are changing our nation from a model of diverse wildlife abundance in the midst of productive human populations to copies of ancient civilizations wherein wild animals continually harmed people and their communities.
The loss of California bighorn sheep, Rocky Mountain elk, deer, pets, livestock, private property and human lives to unmanaged predators is unpardonable in this age of man wherein we have the knowledge and tools to prevent this while maintaining a robust environment.
Your paper is evidently in the vanguard of restoring sanity to the wasteful trends of recent years to abandon human intervention in matters of our environment and trust to the ancient beliefs of a benevolent Mother Nature that somehow trumps our interests and welfare. Thank you for your concern and a fine article.
Oh, and by the way, the fact that you are located in California is particularly heartening to this Virginian whose view of recent “California Dreaming” is undergoing adjustment as a result of this fine article.
