Hollister – Two Hollister residents were arrested last week with two handguns and methamphetamine in their possession when a police detective noticed their car parked illegally in front of World Savings Bank, according to police.

Victor Mata, 38 and another 36-year-old woman were arrested at 12:05pm on Thursday for possession of a controlled substance and carrying a concealed weapon, which are felonies.

A Hollister police detective found approximately six grams of methamphetamine in the car and two semi-automatic handguns in a bag on the front seat, said police spokesman George Ramirez.

The woman was booked into the San Benito County Jail but was released Monday morning after the district attorney’s office did not file charges, according to jail personnel.

District Attorney John Sarsfield could not be reached for comment Monday.

Mata was booked in lieu of $41,000 bail and bailed out about an hour later on Thursday, according to jail personnel.

“They claimed they had legitimate business at the bank,” Ramirez said.

The detective was driving by the bank and noticed the car parked directly in front of the front doors of the bank where there are no parking spaces, Ramirez said.

He approached the couple after he ran the car’s registration and discovered the car had false registration tags on it, Ramirez said.

Ramirez said he didn’t know if the guns were loaded or not, but ammunition was found in the car.
