Gilroy – A small earthquake rumbled through southern Santa Clara County Monday afternoon, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The temblor, which had a preliminary magnitude of 3.9, struck at 12:55pm and was centered about three miles southwest of Gilroy – near Gavilan College – and five miles deep. Light shaking was felt from San Jose to the north and Salinas in the south, according to seismograph reports.
The Gilroy Police Department and the Gilroy Fire Department did not receive any reports of damage or injuries. Staff at Gavilan College did a walk-through of the campus but no injuries or damage were reported.
The Hollister Police Department received one call from a woman wanting to know immediately how big the earthquake was right after it hit, but the Hollister Fire Department did not receive any calls.
Capt. Wally Finck of the Santa Clara County Fire Department El Toro Station said he did not feel the jolt, and the station received no calls for service because of it.
However, at the California Department of Forestry station on Monterey Road in southern Morgan Hill, equipment was moved in the parking lot as a precautionary measure.
The quake was followed by others registering 1.8 at 1:30 and 2:30pm.
At 5pm, the U.S. Geological Survey Web site recorded 26 reports from Hollister, 7 from San Juan Bautista, 77 reports from Gilroy and 49 reports from Morgan Hill from people who said they felt the quake.
